





Position Summary:
NRDC is seeking a part-time consultant on ocean conservation to work in our Beijing office. Supporting ocean conservation within China’s domestic waters will help achieve ocean biodiversity goals and promote ocean health. The Consultant will be for an initial term of 6 months, with the potential to extend based on program needs. The Consultant must be working in the office at least 3 days per week (7 hours per day with 1-hour unpaid lunch break). The consultant will work closely with the project managers of NRDC’s China fisheries and marine protected area (MPA) projects. Under the supervision of managers from China Conservation Project, the Consultant shall perform the assigned tasks on the ocean projects and also help with other work as needed.
Main Responsibilities:
· Develop a knowledge of best international practices in marine protected area management;
· Develop expertise on China’s marine protected areas and approaches to strengthening those areas;
· Build relationships with policy and academic experts in China and elsewhere;
· Research and write reports;
· Write fact sheets and other materials in Chinese; and
· Translate important documents related to fisheries and MPA management from Chinese to English and from English to Chinese, as needed;
· Summarize up-to-date dynamics and information including news, papers, reports and others concerning fisheries and MPAs;
· Assist with preparation of briefings, presentations and other written materials as needed;
· Provide administrative support for project operation and events;
· Assist with policy and technical research and analysis on topics regarding fisheries and MPAs at national, regional and international level; and
· Other related duties assigned by the Conservation Project.
Qualifications:
· Master's degree in a relevant field such as marine conservation, fisheries science or management, ecology or natural resource management;
· Track record of conservation interest and/or work;
· Knowledge of ocean issues a plus;
· Strong research and report writing skills;
· Fluency in Chinese and excellent English written skills;
· Keen on learning new skills and knowledge;
· Ability to work well with others as well as
independently.
