International Day of Action for Seals and the Debut of “Seals the Precious”
Introduction
Each year hundreds of thousands of young seals in Canada are brutally slaughtered for their fur. International animal protection NGOS have been leading a global campaign to oppose this inhumane commercial operation. In 2009, the European Union joined the United States, Croatia and Mexico in decisions against trade in seal products. After losing the European market, the Canadian government began to look to China as the last straw for sustaining the moribund sealing industry.
Reports had it that China and Canada signed a market access agreement to allow the import of Canadian seal products to China. Some Canadian officials and sealing industry representatives suggested that China was more likely to embrace bloody products of animal cruelty because China does not have an animal protection law. This cannot be further from truth. The Chinese people have through various channels told the Canadian government that they care about the life of the seals.
Activities
March 15 is the International Day of Action for Seals. To mark this event, Chinese animal protection groups are sponsoring an event on March 13 to urge the Chinese government to consider banning the import of seal products in response to the rising public opposition. The event is also designed to appeal to the Chinese consumers and businesses to resist seal products. At the event, “Seals the Precious” written and composed by composer Professor Zhang Lida of the Central Conservatory of Music shall debut her music work. The “Choir for Life” shall sing in praise of respect for life and of love for seals in their icy homeland.
At the event, an open letter addressed to His Excellency Mr. David Mulroney, Ambassador of Canada to the People’s Republic of China shall be distributed to the media. Chinese activists shall also brief the media of the latest on the legislative proposal against seal product import, a proposal submitted to the current session of the National People’s Congress.
