POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Senior Manager
PROJECT TITLE: Sustainable Supply Chain Hub
REPORTS TO: China Director
EMPLOYER: Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC)
LOCATION: Shanghai, China(招聘地上海,项目执行地北京、上海、广东、浙江)
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) is a global non-profit organization that leads transformative, community-driven projects primarily in the United States and Asia with a mission to help communities around the world address environmental, economic and social challenges to build a better future shaped and shared by all.
ISC is seeking an experienced professional to oversee the development of a Sustainable Supply Chain Hub (SSCH) program in China. The Hub will build on the foundation of ISC’s Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Academy that engaged corporate entities with supply chains in China to train factory managers and workers on EHS best practices, which resulted in a workforce with more advanced understanding of sustainable supply chains. This re-envisioned hub will create an ecosystem that empowers Chinese companies, stakeholders, and policymakers to implement environmental and social policies and practices in industrial regions. The hub will achieve this through three interrelated pathways, including:
- ISC Learning Academy that will offer courses and training on carbon management, decarbonization technologies, sector-specific best practices, and gender equity considerations in the workplace. Courses will enable companies to shift to renewable electricity, implement energy efficiency measures to reduce GHG emissions, embed emissions monitoring with proper GHG accounting and reporting methods, and adopt gender-equitable policies and procedures.
- Peer-to-Peer Knowledge Exchange that will create a forum for sharing best practices, networking, and co-learning. This knowledge exchange will contribute to creating an ecosystem of industrial climate leadership where best practices can be shared to activate change across brands and factories.
- Partnerships: Since commencing work in China almost 20 years ago, ISC has built a network of key relationships that we will leverage to support and amplify the new ISC Learning Academy. Examples of partnerships include industry associations, universities, and investors to provide capital for environmental and social systems change in supply chains.
The successful candidate will work with partners to establish, grow, advise, and oversee an SSCH in China that will focus initially on working with key export sectors such as electric vehicles (EVs), solar panels, EV batteries, and consumer products. The Senior Manager will serve as the primary point of contact and manager of this program. S/he will coordinate with companies, factory managers, and partners to identify appropriate curriculum development and activities for the Learning Academy. S/he will also facilitate the network of training participants, while working closely with the China Director and other ISC leadership in the development of the SSCH and the execution of fundraising activities.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Conduct assessments on selected companies and industrial sectors to identify/develop/pilot appropriate curricula and build a three-year scope of work based on findings
● Work with universities and other training providers to develop and implement sustainability topics including gender equity, decarbonization strategies (such as energy efficiency and renewable energy), and carbon management (such as carbon taxation, internal carbon pricing, emissions trading schemes, the carbon border adjustment mechanism)
● Identify industrial champions and training partners who can contribute to the SSCH with in-kind expertise and case studies
● Identify and pursue supply chain-related business development opportunities in China and beyond
● Support peer learning activities among SSCH participants
● Provide professional inputs for grant reports, case studies, success stories, and represent ISC at conferences, and webinars
● Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with government counterparts, donor organizations, financial sector organizations, and local and regional partners
● Work closely with ISC Program Leadership, as needed
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
● Entrepreneurial experience in building programs, including appropriately allocating resources, defining new positions, building trust with new partners, assessing viability of a program concept, and evolving a program for long-term success
● Demonstrated capabilities in working effectively with the private sector, and in-depth knowledge of the greater China region
● Experience working in carbon management, clean energy strategies, capacity building, and sustainability reporting in China
● Experience with supporting factories to secure finance for sustainability investments, including practical skills working with banks, non-banking financial institutions, and donors in increasing access to finance
● Knowledge of greenhouse gas emission and energy trading schemes, carbon credits, and other verification carbon standards in the region
● Work experience in both NGO and private sectors is preferred
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
● A master’s degree in sustainability, finance, engineering, or relevant field
