China has achieved enormous gains in terms of economic development; and has now become the second largest economy in the world, only after the United States, with annual GDP growth sustained at around 8% over the past decade. However, its economic success has been accompanies by rising inequalities. Inequality in China has increased appreciably, both between and within both urban and rural areas. The national Gini co-efficient has increased to 0.474 in 2012, although some analysts suggest that the real figure exceeds 0.61.
