Call for Applications to the Mekong Legal Advocacy Institute

As in other regions in the world, public interest law in the Mekong region is growing. We regularly hear of new and encouraging court decisions that lay the mantle of accountability on corporations and government agencies, while providing real benefits to local victims and survivors of injustice. Yet as governments and corporations continue to enter into regional partnerships, lawyers and community leaders must develop new tools and cross-border strategies to address harms occurring in the name of development.

Recognizing the increasing need for access to justice and regional collaboration, EarthRights International (ERI) launched the Mekong Legal Advocacy Institute (MLAI) in 2009. ERI established MLAI to provide a forum for Mekong lawyers to share experiences, learn and develop new legal and advocacy strategies, and take effective coordinated actions. Central to this mission are periodic training sessions that bring in expert lawyers from around the world to share skills and offer guidance in key areas of emerging law.

Joining MLAI

MLAI is currently seeking participants from all Mekong countries. We are looking for public interest lawyers who are:

-      Doing work on environmental and development issues in the Mekong region;

-       Able to communicate well in English; and

-       Available for a full-time training in Chiang Mai from April 17 to 30, 2012.

Application forms are available at:

Please e-mail completed forms to daniel@earthrights.org and bobbie@earthrights.org by February 20, 2012.

The 2012 MLAI session will be held from April 17 to 30, 2012 in Chiang Mai, Thailand. ERI will cover travel and accommodation costs of all selected participants. Participants are expected to be present on all of the training dates.
