An introduction to pre-speech communication for parents and babies
The Deaf Community Development Center will be offering Baby Sign classes to interested play groups around Beijing beginning in June. We will come to you at your regular meeting place.
What is baby sign?
First popularized in the USA, baby sign for hearing infants and toddlers and their parents/care-givers is believed by many to enhance intellectual development and help lessen the effects of the “terrible twos” (a time when toddlers frequently experience frustration and tantrums as they are unable to express their needs adequately)
Baby sign is a method of adapting some basic signs from a manual language, usually American Sign Language, to the spoken language of a child’s parents. Research (see links below) indicates that children who are not yet able to form spoken words are developmentally capable of language communication. Observations of infants and toddlers of signing Deaf parents have consistently shown that these children reach developmental milestones in communications skills sooner than children whose parents use spoken language exclusively. In the late 1990s, a pair of California early childhood researchers became intrigued with this idea and began to study the use of gesture by hearing parents with their hearing children. Their results were so remarkable that this led these two women to develop “Baby Signs” to aid hearing parents in enhancing their hearing child’s potential.
