The Journalism Department of the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, is offering seven Chinese journalists a 2-3 week study and work opportunity in Africa.

If you are a journalist interested in China-Africa issues, we are offering funding and logistical support to visit Johannesburg and then travel to an area of interest elsewhere in Africa to conduct research to produce an article or series of stories for publication or broadcast in China-based media.

We are offering: 2-3 week study and work tour to Africa Attendance at Power Reporting: the African Investigative Journalism Conference in Johannesburg from 31 October – 2 November 2011 The opportunity to travel within Africa to investigate a story that would be of interest to a Chinese audience, with the possibility of collaborating with a local African journalist Paid airfare, accommodation, conference fees, food and orientation tour in Johannesburg Fixed grant amount to cover onward travel, accommodation, visas, travel insurance and other costs to enable research

Applicants should have: a minimum of 5 years experience as a journalist relative fluency in English (stories can be written in Chinese) affiliation to a media outlet or a reasonable expectation that work will be published a valid passport permission from employer to travel for a minimum of two weeks from end October 2011

To apply: Applicants should submit a brief proposal in English outlining a story to be researched in Africa. Preference will be given to proposals with a focus on China-Africa issues, but the story must be of interest to a Chinese audience. Outline the background to the story demonstrating a degree of research and understanding of the topic Provide a rough travel plan and budget for onward travel costs from Johannesburg Provide a short resume and two examples of published work
