CALL FOR PAPERS
The International Conference on Gender and Policy, June 3-4, 2011,
Shantou, China
Organized by: Law School, Shantou University, China
Supported by: Center for Women’s Studies (College of Liberal Arts, Shantou University), Comparative Marriage and Family Law Research Center (Law School, Shantou University)
Theme: “Gender and Mobility in China”
In the post-reform China, “mobility” has emerged to be a prominent social organizing force that brings about transformation in people’s everyday life, social policies, forms of governance, and power dynamics within different social groups in both urban and rural areas. Issues of mobility of people and the opening up, transformation and closure of spaces, emergence of new communities and identifications, transformation of desires and forms of intimacy, and also, the rise of new social problems, paradigms of control and governance have been vastly discussed. In recent years, there has been a growing body of works that addresses the mobility phenomenon in China from gender and sexuality perspectives. It opens up discussions of how different gender and sexual groups are positioned and affected by mobility, and how private lives negotiate with structural transformations. It also takes mobility beyond physical spaces and extends into the cultural domain of representation, and the spatial politics and survival strategies of marginal gender and sexual groups in a highly mobile society.
The conference will focus on contemporary China with the following highlights of research areas:
1. Gender, policy and mobility;
2. Women migrant workers and labour politics;
3. Social class and mobility;
4. Sexuality and mobility;
5. Family, intimacy and mobility;
6. Globalization, gender and mobility;
7. Cultural representation of mobility;
8. Other related areas.
