Rationale　

This training is premised on the value of bridging research and advocacy for gender and sexual rights through the practice of cooperative inquiry. 鈥淐ooperative inquiry as used in this project, is the coming together of scholars and advocates to do research with an action orientation.

Applied in the context of gender and sexuality advocacy in South East Asia, the training seeks to address the unique and shared needs of young academic researchers and young civil society members. On one hand, young academic researchers possess the knowledge and skills on how to do sound scholarly research. Researchers need to be grounded in the everyday realities of discrimination on the basis of gender and sexuality for them to engage in research that can be relevant to social movements. On the other hand, young civil society members are immersed in direct advocacy work with people and communities experiencing discrimination on the basis of gender and sexuality. Advocates need to develop an appreciation of scholarly research and the process of knowledge-creation for them to engage in advocacy that is evidence-based.　

Description of Training　

The training is a one-week or seven-day intensive program with three paces of engagement:

a unique space for researchers to learn more about gender and sexuality advocacies and strategies, as well as civil society debates and discourses;

a unique space for activists to learn more about gender and sexuality research, and the rigor of research design and methodology required;

a shared space for researchers and activists to learn the principles and practices of cooperative inquiry or action research as applied to gender and sexual rights advocacy. 　

The training includes lectures and discussions on conceptual and methodological frameworks for understanding gender and sexuality. It features exemplars of successful action research on diverse gender and sexuality issues as well as lessons learned from the ground, through key resource persons from Kartini, SEPHIS, South Asian Network of Gender Activists and Trainers (SANGAT), Isis International, Women鈥檚 Global Network for Reproductive Rights, Miriam College International Studies Department, Ateneo de Manila University Psychology Department, and the University of the Philippines Center for Women Studies.　

The training highlights a workshop to facilitate experiential learning wherein participants will be able to design their own action research and advocacy plan. Participants are seen as co-facilitators of learning, sharing their knowledge and experiences, throughout the process.　

Criteria for Participants　

To qualify for the training, applicants must:

come from Southeast Asia;

be between 25 to 45 years of age; and

be fluent in written and oral English. 　

Individuals with minority backgrounds are highly encouraged to apply.　

For young scholar applicants:　

Individuals applying as young scholars must have obtained an undergraduate degree (AB/BS). Individuals who have completed or are completing a graduate degree (MA/PHD) may also apply. Preferably, applicants are affiliated with an academic institution through any capacity (e.g. faculty, lecturer, researcher, research assistant) and have research experience.　

For young advocate applicants:　

Individuals applying as young advocates must have direct experience of working on gender and sexual rights advocacy (e.g. training, direct services, policy advocacy, community organizing).

Preferably, applicants are affiliated or based in a civil society organization (CSO) or NGO that works in the area of gender and sexual rights.
